The 2009 UK Gospel Choir Competition is organised by the From Boyhood to Manhood Foundation (FBMF) and the Okpebholo Foundation (OK Foundation). First and foremost it is an opportunity for the UK gospel community to come together in celebration - a celebration of faith through music. It will also be a platform for musical excellence and a showpiece for the very high standards that exist in the UK gospel music scene today; not forgetting the opportunity to win prizes of up to £5000. First, a bit about the history of gospel music.
THE HISTORY
The roots of gospel music as we know it today, took form in the tragedy of African-American slavery. Most slave-owners banned percussion and other instruments; consequently, in America, the instrumental heritage was erased. Thankfully, African harmonies and call-and-response musical patterns endured, into which form, was incorporated a variety of European music traditions. At the time, singing in church was one of just a handful (along with field work songs) of 'permissible music' in the eyes of slave-owners.

Following the abolition of slavery, one person has been described as the father of the evolution of gospel music. Thomas Andrew Dorsey (1899 - 1993 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_A._Dorsey) was a pianist from Georgia. His formula for gospel music combined Christian praise with the rhythms of jazz and blues; his music also focused on the individual's personal expression of belief and faith in God.
THE MUSIC
Dorsey's compositional style; a mix of harmonies and call-and-response vocals became the foundation of modern church choir music. He was also responsible for advocating that this music was referred to as 'gospel'.

Gospel has evolved in four primary branches: choirs, solo singers, a cappella quartets and progressive quartets. The basic structure of modern choir music (one or two lead vocalists accompanied by African-tinged call-and-response vocals and piano or organ) is reminiscent of the Dorsey formula.
GOSPEL MUSIC IN THE UK
Gospel music in the UK is flourishing, with over a thousand choirs circulating around thousands of churches, chapels and schools all over Britain. There are numerous group and solo recording artists some of whom have had success in the mainstream music charts. There are many vibrant websites and discussion forums covering all aspects of gospel and Christian music.
